10 PRINCIPLES of Recovery

A Positive Psychological Approach to Addiction and Life

  • Facebook

“Treatment is not just fixing what is broken; it is nurturing what is best.”

          -Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi

The 10 Principles of Recovery Workbook focuses on an individual’s positive attributes and strengths instead of weaknesses – who and what we are instead of what they’re not. We emphasize solutions and not the addiction itself.

Our therapeutic approach consists of taking individuals through the 10 Principles of Recovery which have been developed in accordance with evidence-based positive psychological ideologies.  This new mindset motivates change. There is much more to mental health and addiction than the absence of mental illness and abstinence.

We believe that a person can flourish and live a meaningful and joyful life when equipped with the right tools.

ABOUT

Introduction

In this workbook, we use both cognitive-behavioral therapy and a positive psychological approach to deal with addiction. Cognitive therapy helps you identify faulty self-defeating messages and replace them with positive messages. Behavioral therapy teaches strategies that help you regulate emotions and develop the thought processes that will override dysfunctional behaviors of your past.

The positive psychological approach helps you capitalize on your strengths rather than be shackled by your weaknesses. Historically, psychology has focused on mental illness and the negatives in human behavior—especially in the addiction world, as evidenced by the label addict. In recent years, interest in human potential and well-being has grown, due in part to prominent scholars/psychologists who focused attention on the study of human strengths. These researchers have identified traits and characteristics that most cultures, religions, and philosophies believe contribute to well-being. We explore these in this workbook.

These ten truth-based principles not only significantly contribute to happiness, but will help individuals through recovery. The 10 Principles of Recovery are emphasized throughout this workbook. With these principles, individuals can develop positive, strengths-based ways of thinking that will change addictive thinking and improve life satisfaction.
